About the Brufut Marathon Run Association

The Brufut Marathon Run Association (BMRA) is a registered non profit making organisation engaged in seeking funds to help in socio-economic development. The association was founded on September 27th, 1994 after a successful trial event was organised by Mamudou Max Jallow who was a long distance runner and has been keen to organise a road race event in Brufut. Max sponsored the first event with a sum of fifty dalasi (D50.00) and a generous donation of Twenty Five Dalasi (D25.00) from Lt. Colonel Lamin Bojang, a native of Brufut. The event attracted only ten people.

Following the event Max requested sponsorship from Christine Oschwald from Switzerland and mobilised his close friends to organise the second event in1995. Christine's interests have been to create a mechanism to help Max better organise the event, get funds to help the people of the Gambia particularly women in the area of food self sufficiency and sponsor school children. She was very impressed with the composition of the task force committee enacted in pursuit of better organisation that included Mr. Lamin Cham a famous sport journalist; Mr. Ba S Jabbi a professional teacher, Mr. Babagalleh Manneh an engineer, Mr Alieu Jarjue an accountant and the late Lamin Kebba Jatta. She contributed both financial and moral support to the organising committee. She came with two daughters; Pia Oschwald who helped the organising committee to coordinate the event while Juli Oschwald participated in the first female race. In 1996, the constitution of the organisation was created to guide the association. Mr. Baba Galleh Manneh became the first elected President to run the association until in 1999 when he travelled to the United States.

BMRA has a Board of Directors, Executive Committee and membership. The Board of Directors meets and discusses pertinent issues on the welfare of the association. The Executive serve as action orient body, implement activities of the association with the support of the membership. The association is open to the general public irrespective of gender, race, religion or any social status.

BMRA organises a run annually to promote sports in Brufut with greater emphasis on the promotion of Long Distance Run and Bicycle Race. The association raises funds and sponsors needy and deserving school children as well as support community projects in Brufut. The association has been affiliated with youths of Bakau, Serrekunda, Brikama, Kafuta and Njawara organising similar events, raising funds and supporting their communities.

However, the association heavily relies on sponsorship funds, registration fees and donations from invited guests. It also organises fund raising activities to support its running cost to sustain the event. Christine Oschwald is the first person to sponsor the event for 3 years then she introduced Mr. John Allan a British National to the association in 1996. Mr. Allan then a member of Friends of the Gambia Association (FOTGA) managed to tap funds from their association to support BMR. Under the dynamic leadership of then FOTGA Chairman David Smith, they became the main sponsors of the annual event which made it very successful each year.

From 2006 the association has associated with John Carter, an English man and Mustapha Njie (TAF) a business tycoon in The Gambia who also support the association financially. The association is very much grateful to the above mentioned individuals and members of FOTGA for their valuable contribution to the success of the annual events.
